Power Corrupts
It is no surprise to me that Elizabeth May and the Green Party have not been allowed in the televised debates. History has shown that once people have a taste of power, they are easily hooked and loathe to let it go... and these guys have been hooked for a long time.
Letting Elizabeth in the debate would be bad for everyone - except of course Canadians. The Bloq already is struggling since their very reason for existence - separation from Canada - is falling out of favour with the people of Quebec. The NDP too have lost their way and Jack Layton is more interested in well ... Jack Layton than the environment, social issues or democracy.
As for Harper, he realizes that the Greens are not just taking NDP and Liberal votes but are also taking Red Tory votes. In the London Central and Guelph bi-elections we had close 2 people races between Liberals and Greens. The only way that could have happened is if we took Conservative votes.
My understanding is that in the 2 general elections, since the Alliance party consumed the Progressive Conservative party, the no longer progressive Conservatives have yet to get as many votes in a general election as they did when the Alliance and PCs were separate entities. This has to be troubling for Harper.
Harpers assertions that Dion and May are a team with the same platform are of course absurd. Truth and integrity and leadership are all words that Harper uses but to paraphrase Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride" - He keeps using those words but I don't think they mean what he thinks they mean." I am sure we will have many more examples of this as the election unfolds.
